Counter measures

Aberporth has been established for over 50 years, and is considered to be one of the most advanced sea ranges in the world. The range (A 6200 square km sea area, with a safety area of unlimited height) provides sophisticated trials control and display, communications, radar, electro-optical telemetry and telecommand facilities coordinated with an expert trials planning capability to ensure a flexible trials operation, data gathering and formatting service to fit the customers requirements.

The Aberporth range complex conducts missile and air flight weapon testing in the following modes:-

Four year standards based apprentice training scheme

Year I & II
Workshop based training in Analogue & Digital electronics, basic computer programming and interfacing. Day release to Cardigan College resulting in ONC, BTEC Level I, II & III in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

Year III & IV
On site training and experience in high tech military equipment such as RADAR (primary, secondary & precision monopulse), Electro optical tracking instrumentation, Telemetry, Kine Theodolite tracking cameras. Qualifications achieved : City & Guilds 224, NVQ Level III Electronic assembly

1997 S4C Independant Television [ Cardiff ]


S4C first came on air at 6.00pm on Monday, November 1, 1982. The advent of a fourth channel was seen by many as an opportunity to aim for a new beginning in public service broadcasting in Wales. S4C a commissioning broadcaster, not a programme producer is located on the outskirts of Cardiff. After my degree I moved to the area and was employed to provide cover while a member of staff was on holiday. I was later employed again due to an increased workload within the I.T department.

My responsibilities included:-

  • Technical support for approx. 150 users in MS Office, E-mail applications & computer hardware.
  • Installation and configuration of dedicated document scanning system, in preparation for paperless office.
  • Support in the configuration of site PC's for the introduction of new intranet

Based in the London office my responsibilities during my three month contract at Aker involved the following:-
  • The reduction of computer network.
  • The reinstallation & configuration of previous backup hardware for the retrieval of mass archived data and transference to new storage medium.
  • General IT support and consultancy.

Eurofighter Typhoon

BAE SYSTEMS is one of the leading military electronic company's, with subsidiary operations, research and development teams, and customers all over the world.

The purpose of BAE SYSTEMS business is to supply products and services to large and small customers all over the world. There are literally thousands of these products and services, and they range from a relatively small, single piece of telecommunications equipment to all the elements involved in massive intercontinental projects for national or supera-national government agencies such as the Eurofighter Typhoon.

The site at Rochester employ's over 2000 people in many different disciplines

My position at BAE SYSTEMS was within the Avionics division, working as a development engineer on the Flight Control System (FCS) primarily on the Stick Sensor and Interface Control Assembly (SSICA)

Hardware Development Engineer on the Eurofighter Typhoon

My role on Eurofighter was primarily the qualification, documentation of the development Stick Sensor and Interface Control Assembly (SSICA), and the re-design of the production series SSICA.

The SSICA is a centre-mounted control pedestal, which forms the primary interface between the pilot and the FCS. The unit is a two-axis stick displacement control and provides "pilot feel" by means of a spring/damper mechanism in each of the pitch and roll axes. The SSICA houses four circuit cards which act as a quadruplex data acquisition unit, which interfaces throttles, rudder pedals, pitch and roll stick commands, and various FCS related switches and lamps to the FCCs via STANAG 3838 data buses

Eurofighter Typhoon

Currently in development, with the first production series Aircraft due in 2002. Built by four work share partners (Britain, Germany, Italy & Spain) this multirole fighter has already proven itself in the aviation world. This was strengthened at the Farnborough airshow where one of the development planes put on a fantastic display, unmatched by any other aircraft! Eurofighter: guaranteeing air superiority into the next millennium.

Case study: Intelligent Finance (first project with etc)

Intelligent Finance (a division of Halifax plc) was launched in Q1 2001. etc developed the WAP channel which was the first WAP project in the world to use BroadVision as the application server. Due to the nature of the clients business security was a prime issue. My role was do design the look & feel, navigation, BroadVision development, Functional testing and liase with the client / third party vendors, to ensure all timescales were met. For many months I was the only consultant on site at Intelligent Finance and hence represented the company.
